GREAT TEQUILA INFO, DRINKS, & COOKING RECIPES
First is a little information on the making of Tequila. I'm not a scholar but I know a little. Tequila is distilled from the juice of the agave plant. After the agave plant has grown several years, it starts to store up sugars to feed a bloom. This bloom needs to be removed or it will use all the sugars that we want to distill. Ancient Aztec Indians used the agave plant for many things. This included processing the leaves into a type of twine and also allowing the juice to ferment and drinking it. This was the first Tequila. Later, the fermented juice was distilled producing the first real Tequila. Today, Tequila is produced in many distilleries in Mexico, and much of it is exported to the United States.
Selecting Tequila: All you need to select a good Tequila is to follow these simple instructions:
NEVER buy a Tequila that you have seen advertised. Most of these brands spend so much on advertising, that they skimp on quality. Look on the label for "100% AGAVE". If this is not on the label, DO NOT buy the bottle! This means that the "Tequila" in the bottle is not really Tequila. It contains either water, colorings, artificial this, artificial that, etc. Make sure that the Tequila is made in Mexico. "Made" is "Hecho" in Spanish, either of these will do. Mexico can not make whiskey, we sure can not make Tequila. Try anything within these criteria, find the one you like the best, enjoy! So far my favorite is Hornitos Sauza. You can find it in most liquor stores, or they can order it for you. It has a green label with HORNITOS in red. This Tequila is smooth and goes down easy. Some of the cheap brands are really rough on the throat and make you gag and choke. Good Tequila, such as HORNITOS does not do this.
Shooting Tequila: Shooting Tequila consists of 3 easy steps: 1) Lick ~ 2)Slam ~ 3)Suck! Now what else does that sound like?
These steps are so easy to repeat, that after a little practice, you can perform them even if you're very, very drunk. A little setup is required. Wet the area between your thumb and forefinger of your drinking hand with a wedge of lime. Pour a little salt on the wet area. Pour a shot of Tequila. Hold the shot glass, or tumbler if you are brave, in the same hand that has the salt on it. Now you are ready.
Lick ~ lick the salt off of the area between your thumb and forefinger. Slam ~ slam the shot of Tequila in one gulp. Suck ~ suck on the wedge of lime.
Congratulations! You are now a Tequila drinker. The lime is the real key. For some reason the flavor of the lime mixes with the flavor of the Tequila to create an unbelievably extraordinary flavor. For a sweet twist of a shot, instead of lime and salt, try an orange and sugar...also make sure the Tequila is chilled.
